Open Category Rules 2008


Theme: "Saving Global Environment"

Rules

1 A team may only participate in Regular category or Open Category!
2 The competition will take place within three age groups: Elementary, JH and HS.
3 Teams participating in the Open Category will work to create a robot within the theme "Saving Global Environment".
4 There is no restriction on the balance between LEGO elements and other materials. However all robots must be operated by RCX or NXT controller and any software.
5 Robots may be preassembled and software program may be premade!
6 The robot(s) including additional decorations may not exceed the floor size of 2970 mm x 1860 mm (no tables are supplied).
7 Open Category teams must go though this process: test and make final assembly (if needed) of the robot at designated location and decorate the booth with poster; demonstration to the judges; and Q&A from the judges.
8 Teams must submit a report summarizing what the robot can do, and in which way the robot is unique. The description must be visualized by pictures/photos from different angle of the robot creation and example of the program. The report must be handed out to the judges in paper form.
9 Teams must decorate the booth with one or more posters with the dimension of minimum 120 cm x 90 cm. The poster(s) should introduce the robot project to the visitors.
10 Team must submit (online, via uploading) a 2 min. video to the WRO website before 15. October 2008.


Presentation

There will be three judges for each age group.

Teams will have around 10 minutes with the judges: 5 minutes to explain and demonstrate the robot, and remaining 2 - 5 minutes for Q&A from the judges.


Judging Criteria are as follows

  • Most Creative Design by appearance, uniqueness and interactive behaviour.
  • Best Technical Design by good engineering and stability.
  • Best Presentation by successful demonstration, good explanation by speak, poster and video as well as high team spirit.
  • Minus points: Penalty points are given if rules are not fulfilled: (Controller, poster, report and video).
  • NB: If robot performance is clearly not within the theme 0 points is given!
